Smell identification scores of patients with essential tremor

چکیده
It has been reported that patients with essential tremor have a much higher risk of Parkinson’s disease; moreover, olfactory dysfunction is common in Parkinson’s disease and becomes apparent early in the disease process. We aimed to investigate the olfactory function of essential tremor patients using the Short Smell Test Battery of GATA Haydarpaşa (GULTEST), which consists of five odors (banana, lemon, mint, rose, and chocolate). The participants in the study were 155 male essential tremor patients, 20–36 years of age (mean age: 21.2), and 290 male control subjects, 20–35 years of age (mean age: 21.1). The two groups were similar in terms of age, gender, and smoking history; their mean GULTEST scores were 3.41 and 3.4, respectively. Our results showed no loss of olfactory function in young male essential tremor patients. Neurology Asia 2014; 19(3) : 271 – 275

OBJECTIVE To characterize the olfactory identification in 40 essential tremor (ET) patients, with the University of Pennsylvania 12 Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), to correlate UPSIT scores to clinical and epidemiological data and to compare it to 89 aged matched controls. METHOD Patients were assessed using ET Clinical Scale of Evaluation and UPSIT. RESULTS In patients with ET, the UPSI...
متن کاملHigher blood harmane (1-methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole) concentrations correlate with lower olfactory scores in essential tremor.
BACKGROUND Harmane (1-methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole), a neurotoxin, may be an environmental risk factor for essential tremor (ET). Harmane and related chemicals are toxic to the cerebellum. Whether it is through this mechanism (cerebellar toxicity) that harmane leads to ET is unknown. Impaired olfaction may be a feature of cerebellar disease. OBJECTIVE To determine whether blood harmane conce...

To explore the nature of the olfactory dysfunction associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), 81 PD patients who scored well on a cognitive screening test were administered the 40-odorant University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test; 38 were additionally given a forced-choice phenylethyl alcohol odor detection threshold test. Clinical ratings of 11 neurologic symptoms (three bilateral) w...
متن کاملCultural Adaptation of Sniffin’ Sticks Smell Identification Test: The Malaysian Version
Introduction: Sniffin’ Sticks smell identification test is a tool used for evaluation of olfactory function but the results are culture-dependent. It relies on the subject’s familiarity to the odorant and descriptors. This study aims to develop the Malaysian version of Sniffin’ Sticks smell identification test suitable for local population usage. Materials and Methods: The o...

Introduction: The performance in most smell identification tests is subjected to cultural variations. This study aimed to evaluate age, gender, and smoking-related effects on the test performance in the North of Iran. Materials and Methods: The olfactory function of 1470 eligible subjects was assessed in this study. Moreover, this study evaluated the influence of age, ...
